1909 E102 Set Of 25 Patsy Dougherty PSA NM-MT 8 - Pop One, None Higher!

1909 E102 "Set of 25."

For decades this series has always fascinated collectors because it was somewhere along the line that the cards were mistakenly dated to 1908 opening it up to claims that it contained the rookie card of Ty Cobb. However, Dave Shean is on the 25 different man roster with Boston, a team he was traded to in 1909, ending that debate. The cards offer no insight into who distributed them and maybe they were just meant to be given out by any type of business. The base of the reverse, below the cascading layout of subjects were, by design, left with an awkward blank area (like trade cards of the 19th century. Along the top, ad copy reads, "This card is one of a set of Twenty-five BASE BALL PLAYERS, as follows" which should have been pretty cut and dry, but there are second cards of Honus Wagner, Dots Miller, Larry Doyle, and Boss Schmidt - the rarest cards in the series - making for a "Set of 29." The Dots Miller "Fielding" variant is famous for its rarity. All illustrations parallel the E101, E105 and all E92 brands. This auction features a fantastic partial set, all graded by PSA, that collectively generates a 5.4 GPA (no easy task with caramel cards) and would rank as the #2 Current Finest set on the PSA Set Registry. Most rank among the finest or among the finest on the PSA census.

Offered is Patsy Dougherty with the Chicago White Sox. A scarce subject. Fresh off the presses. Graded PSA NM-MT 8. Total Pop: Only Nineteen. Total Pop For Grade: One! Graded Higher: None!
