Description

1909-11 T206 Ty Cobb Bat Off Shoulder PSA NM-MT 8. In 1911, the probable date of this card's birth, Tyrus Raymond Cobb was at the apex of his considerable powers. His league-leading numbers that season are just ridiculous: .420 average, 248 hits, 47 doubles, 24 triples, 127 RBIs, 83 stolen bases! Despite his vicious temperament that likely kept him out of the running other seasons, the American League had no choice but to crown him Most Valuable Player, the only season he was honored as such. Look closely at the image of the Peach, painted close to a century ago, and you can see it in his eyes. Though he stands before a serene background of soft pastel, the stare is one of great determination. It's one of the finest portraits in the long and impressive history of baseball card art.

Extending outward from this classic image, we come to four blazing white borders and corners offering only the slightest hint of impact to account for the grade. Otherwise we can identify no caveats worthy of mention, as colors are bright, registration is crisp, and centering is precise to the last percentile. Certainly one of the very finest Ty Cobb cards of any format to reach the public auction block in recent memory, well deserving of its lofty professional assessment.
