Description

Only two superior!

1909-11 T206 Sweet Caporal Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background PSA NM-MT 8. Soon after his Detroit Tigers fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1909 World Series, the only meeting between these two Dead Ball era legends, Cobb lamented of Honus Wagner, "That god damned Dutchman is the only man in the game I can't scare." It was around that time that two of the most famous baseball cards in the collecting hobby were born, each a member of the fabled T206 set that has fascinated hobbyists for a full century. And one hundred years after Cobb and Wagner battled for supremacy in the sixth edition of the Fall Classic, their rivalry continues.

When factoring condition into the assessment, the listed beauty is even more scarce than the Wagner representation that has captured the imagination of the hobby for over a century. There are just nineteen Red Background Cobbs assessed by PSA at this elite level, with only two rising higher (by only half a point). Thirty-two unqualified Wagners appear in a PSA slab.

It will require close inspection to locate any deviation from perfection, as the surfaces are clean, the corners sharp, and even the centering--a common stumbling block for Dead Ball Era cardboard--finds perfect balance here. Arguably the most celebrated of all Cobb cardboard commemorations, in a stunning state of preservation.
