Fred Merkle was a talented first baseman best remembered for his infamous 1908 baserunning error, known as "Merkle's Boner," which played a pivotal role in that season's pennant race. Despite the controversy, he had a long and productive career, appearing in five World Series and collecting over 1,500 hits.
