    Description

1909-11 T206 Sovereign 350 Ty Cobb (Portrait-Red) PSA EX 5. This is one of the prettiest of the T206 advertising backs in our estimation, and it's a quite fitting one for the subject, its "Fit for a King" slogan an unintentional nod to the man who would reign for decades as Major League Baseball's most prolific hitter. While this auction is a study and celebration of the various brands of the same card, this one sports a particularly impressive obverse, with bold colors, sharp registration, fine centering and just the slightest corner touches to document eleven decades of survival.

Only twenty-five Sovereigns exist for this Red Cobb in the PSA population, and this is one of five at the grade. Only a single example has soared higher.

More Information: The T206 Ty Cobb Red Portrait Collection

The issue is currently celebrating the 110th anniversary of its closing season, but the magnum opus of American Tobacco’s baseball card promotions has progressively revealed its deeper secrets over the course of decades since hobby pioneer Jefferson Burdick filed the creation under its "T206" nomenclature. Likewise nicknamed "The Monster" for the bravery required in taming its 524 subjects into a single collection, the iconic tobacco set is frankly considerably more complex than even Burdick had imagined.

This remarkable offering of Red Portrait Ty Cobb cards is illustrative of that point, a collection that would make hip hop pioneer Sir Mix-a-Lot proud for its unabashed fixation upon the backside. Never before has an assembly of every available advertising back for a single T206 entry been presented in a single auction, and Heritage is proud to once again break new ground for our collecting clientele. The contents range from high-quality examples of the dominant Sweet Caporal and Piedmont to the rare and renowned "Ty Cobb King of the Smoking Tobacco World" advertising that outshines even the legendary Honus Wagner for scarcity.

All fifteen tobacco brands are present and accounted for, and even a ridiculously scarce blank-backed specimen and the fraternal twins of the T213 and T215 issues that closely mirror the T206 design. Once this Platinum Night auction scatters this assembly to the four corners of the globe, it’s unlikely the feat will ever be repeated. This is trading card history in the making, and a field of battle that will draw only the most refined and determined of cardboard connoisseurs into competition.

Signature Internet Extended Bid: These Auctions are presented via catalog and online. Bidding is taken through our website or via phone. There are two phases of bidding during this type of auction: 1) Normal bidding: Bids are taken up until 10 PM CT the night the auction closes. 2) 30 Minute Ending: On a lot-by-lot basis, starting at 10:00 PM CT, any person who has bid on the lot previously may continue to bid on that lot until there are no more bids for 30 minutes. For example, if you bid on a lot during Normal Bidding, you could participate during Extended Bidding for that lot, but not on lots you did not bid on previously. If a bid was placed at 10:15, the new end time for that lot would become 10:45. If no other bids were placed before 10:45, the lot would close. If you are the high bidder on a lot, changing your bid will not extend the bidding during the 30 Minute Ending phase (only a bid from another bidder will extend bidding). If you are the only bidder at 10 PM, you will automatically win the lot at 10:30. Important: After normal bidding ends, you must be signed-on to the Heritage site to see the bidding option on lots where you qualify for extended bidding.
