Description

1909-11 T206 Polar Bear Ray Demmitt (St. Louis) PSA VG-EX 4. Ray Demmitt made his rookie debut in 1909 with the New York Highlanders. He was traded to the St. Louis Browns for the 1910 season. After just ten games of St. Louis service, Demmitt was unceremoniously dismissed to an Eastern League assignment for three seasons in the minors. Demmitt would scrap his way back to the Bigs in 1914. So while those cards featuring Demmitt as a 1909 member of the team that would come to be known as the Yankees are rather commonly available, this St. Louis variation continues to bedevil collectors a century later.

Graded PSA VG-EX 4. This card offers a close to perfectly centered portrait and some consistent corner wear. There are no major condition detriments and surface stains which is all but inevitable with "Polar Bear" back cards is at a very modest level. Such tolerable condition concerns can easily be accepted in light of the significant scarcity. With confirmed Polar Bear backs, this is one of fourteen at the VG-EX level with eight rated higher.
