Description

1909-11 T206 El Principe De Gales Walter Johnson (Hands At Chest) SGC 80 EX-NM 6. For over half a century, Walter Johnson endured a lonely existence as the sole inhabitant of the 3,000 Strikeout Clubhouse until Cardinals ace Bob Gibson became his first roommate in 1974. Though Gibson may have matched Johnson's famous velocity, the Big Train was a singular rarity in the dawning decades of the twentieth century, striking fear into the hearts of even the most accomplished and unflappable batsmen of the day.

Walter Johnson would join Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner and Christy Mathewson as the very first inductees of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Our offered 1909-11 T206 White Border card of his "Hands at Chest" entry and scarcer "El Principe De Gales" brand ad appears virtually unchanged from its state as it emerged from a cigarette pack over a century ago, with sharp corners and clean surfaces, fresh inks and brilliant white borders. Rated almost 100% on centering. A truly gorgeous specimen from the game's first great power pitcher. Graded SGC 80 EX-NM 6.
