Description

1909-11 E90-1 American Caramel Joe Jackson Rookie SGC VG 3. He's one of the most complicated legends of our National Pastime, an illiterate child laborer from the mills of South Carolina who would emerge as one of the greatest ballplayers the world would ever see. But that popularity would ultimately fall to ignominy as Shoeless Joe was swept up in the greatest scandal in Major League history, sentenced by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis to a term of banishment that is now approaching its centennial. But if baseball itself hasn't yet forgiven Jackson, the majority of baseball historians, and certainly hobbyists in the collectibles realm, have opened their arms and hearts to the famed Black Sox conspirator.

Here we present one of the most coveted relics of the latter, a marvelous example of Jackson's key rookie card, the 1909-11 E90-1 American Caramel card. While his exploits with the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox are well-known, few realize that Jackson actually got his start in the Big Leagues with Connie Mack's Philadelphia A's in 1908. We must recognize the American Caramel Company for including the essentially unknown Jackson in their 120-card promotion as one of the few issues of the era features the young slugger, a rare opportunity to see Shoeless Joe as a representative of the City of Brotherly Love.

Only slightly more available to the collecting community that its storied contemporary, the T206 Wagner, this Jackson rookie shares ink with the Old Dutchman in any ranking of the top twenty cards in the hobby. Fewer than ninety examples currently reside in a SGC slab, with just thirteen charting higher than the subject representation.

We'd consider this a very strong specimen for the grade, most notably for the absence of any creasing/wrinkling that plagues the vast majority of other entries from this issue. Edge and corner wear is well in line with the standard, as is centering, which is just a touch east of perfect. Registration likewise narrowly misses the bullseye, sending a light scattering of print dots into the upper border. The overall result is a card that has clearly earned its position in the top twenty percent of the tiny surviving population. Graded SGC VG 3.

Auction Type
Signature Internet Extended Bid: These Auctions are presented via catalog and online. Bidding is taken through our website or via phone. There are two phases of bidding during this type of auction: 1) Normal bidding: Bids are taken up until 10 PM CT the night the auction closes. 2) 30 Minute Ending: On a lot-by-lot basis, starting at 10:00 PM CT, any person who has bid on the lot previously may continue to bid on that lot until there are no more bids for 30 minutes. For example, if you bid on a lot during Normal Bidding, you could participate during Extended Bidding for that lot, but not on lots you did not bid on previously. If a bid was placed at 10:15, the new end time for that lot would become 10:45. If no other bids were placed before 10:45, the lot would close. If you are the high bidder on a lot, changing your bid will not extend the bidding during the 30 Minute Ending phase (only a bid from another bidder will extend bidding). If you are the only bidder at 10 PM, you will automatically win the lot at 10:30. Important: After normal bidding ends, you must be signed-on to the Heritage site to see the bidding option on lots where you qualify for extended bidding and you must be on an individual lot page to reflect the accurate time remaining for that particular lot.
