1909-11 E90-1 American Caramel Joe Jackson Rookie PSA VG 3.
He's one of the most complicated legends of our National Pastime,
an illiterate child laborer from the mills of South Carolina who
would emerge as one of the greatest ballplayers the world would
ever see. But that popularity would ultimately fall to ignominy as
Shoeless Joe was swept up in the greatest scandal in Major League
history, sentenced by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis to a
term of banishment that lasted more than a century until a decision
was made in May of 2025 to remove him from the permanently
ineligible list. His posthumous path to the Hall of Fame is now
open, but his induction is not guaranteed. Jackson will be
considered by the Hall's Classic Era Committee when it meets again
in December of 2027.Here we present one of the most coveted relics of the latter, a marvelous example of Jackson's key rookie card, the 1909-11 E90-1 American Caramel card. While his exploits with the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox are well-known, few realize that Jackson actually got his start in the Big Leagues with Connie Mack's Philadelphia A's in 1908. We must recognize the American Caramel Company for including the essentially unknown Jackson in their 120-card promotion as one of the few issues of the era that features the young slugger, a rare opportunity to see Shoeless Joe as a representative of the City of Brotherly Love.
Only slightly more available to the collecting community that its storied contemporary, the T206 Wagner, this Jackson rookie shares ink with the Old Dutchman in any ranking of the top twenty cards in the hobby. Slightly more than 100 examples currently reside in a PSA slab, with just thirteen charting higher than the subject representation.
The subject card lands firmly at its assessed level, demonstrating the common period faults of corner wear and imperfect centering, but lettering is bold and colors are quite bright, resulting in a specimen that ably celebrates the professional arrival of a man who, for the first time, appears to be on the brink of Cooperstown enshrinement. Graded PSA VG 3.
