Description

One of only six known examples!

1903 E107 Breisch Williams Honus Wagner Rookie SGC Authentic. There is no question that Honus Wagner's star has been burnished over the passing decades by his residence upon baseball's most coveted tobacco card, but the offered commemorative makes his fabled T206 seen downright common by comparison. This elder sibling is one of just six appearing in the populations of SGC and PSA combined, whereas most estimates of the population of the T206 are ten times as high. The set from which this supreme rarity derives is a towering hobby milestone in its own right, widely considered to be the first major baseball set of the twentieth century, establishing this as the Wagner card with the greatest claim to the adjective of "rookie."

The 1903 season saw the Old Dutchman capture the National League batting championship for the second of an eventual eight times in his storied career, helping to run the pennant to the top of the mast of the Pittsburgh Pirates ship. The Bucs would fall to the underdog Boston Red Sox in the very first edition of the World Series this season, with Wagner haunted by his poor Fall Classic showing for a half-dozen years before finding redemption with a heroic performance to defeat Ty Cobb's Detroit Tigers to capture the 1909 World Championship.

While a degree of paper loss to each side and some horizontal creasing must be noted, any concerns about these faults must just as quickly be dismissed in light of the monumental rarity of the card. We should also stress that the central image of the card is only minimally affected, providing aesthetics well within acceptable range for an serious collector of early cardboard.
