    Description

    Population one, none finer!

1902 W600 Sporting Life Cabinets Ed Delehanty (Delahanty) PSA NM-MT 8. "Big Ed" Delahanty was one of the most feared sluggers of the turn-of-the-century game. Three times Delahanty finished the season north of the fabled .400 mark, and his .346 career average places him fifth on the all-time leaderboard. He remains the only man in history to hit four inside-the-park home runs in a single contest. But despite the remarkable talent that earned him a 1945 posthumous induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Ed Delahanty's primary historical association remains the shocking manner of his sudden passing. Ejected from a railroad train just north of the Canada/US border on July 2, 1903 for drunk and disorderly conduct, Delahanty attempted to cross a railroad bridge over the Niagara River on foot only to fall to his death, swept over the famous Falls.

The "Type 1" mount of this particular example dates production to 1902, the last full season of the tragic superstar's career and life, and one in which he'd earn the distinction as the first ballplayer to claim ownership of a batting title from each Major League, having jumped from the Philadelphia Phillies to the fledgling Washington Senators of the Junior Circuit after the completion of the 1901 season. His piercing, wide-eyed glare registers as particularly haunting when viewed in the context of the cruel fate that awaited him, but otherwise the rare and ancient relic provides only cause for celebration.

Only four Delahanty representations have ever been evaluated by the experts at PSA, the closest suitor a full two grades below this supreme example. In fact, not a single W600 of any player has charted higher than PSA NM-MT 8, an exclusive club that contains just one dozen members. Of these twelve, Delahanty is the sole Cooperstown immortal, powerful ammunition in the argument that this is the finest W600 in the world, period. Original glassine envelope that contained the card when issued is included.
