Description

1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug John Ward (Retired) SGC 80 EX/NM 6 - Pop One, None Higher! John Ward excelled at both shortstop and pitcher during his 17-season Major League career. It was Ward who set the precedent that Babe Ruth would later follow by starting out as a Hall of Fame caliber pitcher and later converting to a position allowing for daily play and plate appearances. Ward led the National League circuit with 47 wins with Providence Grays in 1879 and in 1887 led the league in stolen bases as a member of the New York Giants. The second perfect game in the history of professional baseball in 1880 was with Ward on the mound. Off the field, his tremendous influence was felt as he organized the Players' Brotherhood, the first baseball players union, and formed the short-lived Players League in 1890. The influence of John Ward on baseball is undeniable. Graded SGC 80 EX/NM 6. Combine all three "John Ward" entries on the SGC census and one find there are fifty-seven total cards reviewed. Regardless of the variant or unspecified entries - This is the highest graded example of them all! Only 3% of the over 1,400 Mayo's graded by SGC have graded EX/NM or higher. This is a special card featuring a giant of 19th century baseball and a true condition rarity.
