    Description

    A newly discovered beauty!

1894 N142 Honest Cabinet Ed Delahanty SGC 50 VG/EX 4 - The Finest Example on Record. "Big Ed" Delahanty was one of the most feared sluggers of the turn-of-the-century game. Three times Delahanty finished a Major League season north of the fabled .400 mark, and his .346 career average places him fifth on the all-time leaderboard. He remains the only man in history to hit four inside-the-park home runs in a single contest. But despite the remarkable talent that earned him a 1945 posthumous induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Ed Delahanty's legacy remains the shocking manner of his sudden passing. Ejected from a railroad train just north of the Canada/US border on July 2, 1903 for drunk and disorderly conduct, Delahanty attempted to cross a railroad bridge over the Niagara River on foot only to fall to his death, swept over the famous Falls.

This remarkable treasure is a gleaming memento from happier times when he was hailed as one of the greatest figures in baseball. The breathtaking series of 6x9.5" cabinet cards issued under the "Honest" trademark was limited to just seven names - four baseball players and three cyclists - the gorgeous portraiture firmly ranking Duke as a premier producer of tobacco premiums of the era. It's an exceptionally scarce issue, with the few elite examples surfacing in the hobby quickly absorbed into permanent collections. This copy was discovered within a handwritten pages of a sizeable personal journal, clearly a treasured keepsake as it was the only item tucked away within the life story of the person who we assume to be the original owner.

Graded SGC 50 VG/EX 4, this is the single highest graded example from a meager total census of only seven. It is a boon that a personal notebook played host to our prize offering, sparing it the pin holes and back damage so commonly encountered on collectibles of this type. The list of condition concerns is brief and lacks anything alarming. Minor wear affects the rounded (as issued) corners; spots of edge chipping, almost impossible to avoid with the die-cutting process; mild toning on the reverse and one curved shaped printing anomaly in the upper left top edge. Delahanty is the most important and coveted of the four baseball N142 subjects, his portrait expertly registered against the plain white background. Many would argue that this is the finest tobacco tribute to the tragic Hall of Famer to appear within the Standard Catalog.
