Description

1894 N142 Duke "Honest" Cabinet George Davis SGC Authentic. The series designated N142 are referred to as cabinet cards but are really so much more. For one, their generous 6" x 9-1/2" size dwarfs your traditional cabinet and in place of a real photo there is a beautifully lithographed illustration. Certainly a premium obtained in exchange for what was probably a king's ransom in coupons. N142s are among the most breathtaking tobacco promotions of the 1890's with examples only rarely offered. Presented is a real attention grabber depicting Hall of Fame shortstop George Davis of the New York Giants. G. S. was one of the best infielders of his era but his contributions to baseball not fully recognized until the HoF welcomed him in 1998. A pair of (as issued) rounded corners show modest amounts of wear, a third very little with the fourth being enhanced with matching grey touch up paint. This is the only reason for the SGC Authentic assessment. The central portrait is amazing with sharp detail and not a blemish to affect enjoyment. The reverse is clean and with no major condition detriments. Overall presentation ranks at the "excellent" level with a portrait quality even higher. There can't be any 19th Century enthusiast that doesn't dream of addition any N142 to their collection. A truly rare collectible found in only the most advanced collection.
