Description

1894 N142 Duke "Honest" Cabinet George Davis SGC 40 VG 3 - None Higher. The N142 series are referred to as cabinet cards but are really so much more. For one, their generous 6" x 9-1/2" size dwarfs your traditional cabinet and in place of a possibly faded photo there is a beautifully lithographed illustration. Certainly a premium obtained in exchange for what was probably a king's ransom in coupons. They are among the most breathtaking tobacco promotions of the 1890's with examples only rarely offered. Presented is one of the best infielders of his era - Hall of Fame shortstop George S. Davis of the New York Giants. The mount shows no creasing and only modest edge wear. Surface toning and staining explain the SGC assessment. The central portrait is amazing with sharp detail and not a blemish to affect enjoyment with an overall visual presentation at the "excellent-mint" level. Graded SGC 40 VG 3. One of just ten total examples noted on the SGC census. Pop three in VG with none higher.
