    Description

1894 Betz Studio Baltimore Orioles Cabinet Photo SGC Poor 1. The 1894 Baltimore Orioles featured no less than seven Hall of Famers. Manager Ned Hanlon, Dan Brouthers, Hugh Jennings, John McGraw, Willie Keeler, Joe Kelley and Wilbert Robinson would all earn membership into Cooperstown. The team was a fascinating group of talented malcontents who have become known for trick plays and antics like moving the baseline or physically holding runners on base. With less than impressive finishes the two prior years it was probably this "what'll they do next" approach that kept crowds coming Union Park day after day. What they did next was win! 1894 saw 89 victories with every man in the batting order hitting .300 or better ultimately earning "World Champions" title with repeating success in 1895 and 1896. Offered is the perfect companion piece to the pendant/ribbon available elsewhere in this auction - a rare 16-man team composite cabinet card. Graded SGC 10 Poor 1, for surface wear, writing on the reverse and multiple small pinholes - all affecting the mount. The treasured relic has survived quite well with only three others recorded in the SGC census. The "Betz" and address adorn the card mount, the sepia-toned image has faded some in the last 120-years but we should all look so good at this age. Considering the personality of the players, the carnations, bow ties and formal attire are sort of a tongue-in-cheek inside joke on the adoring viewers. The condition of the central image is remarkable with no wear or scratches and strong gloss.
