1888 N338-2 S.F. Hess Mickey Welch SGC 40 VG 3 - From a Newly Discovered Collection! All of the S. F. Hess cards in this auction and a collection of N172 Old Judge cards comes from a newly discovered collection. They are being offered up for auction for the first time... after 130 years. Among the greater rarities of 19th Century baseball cards are the S.F. Hess promotions. Three series feature young newsboys, athletes and celebrities and baseball players of the PCL. New York Giants and Mets, St. Louis and Detroit baseball players take center stage in the entry Burdick called "N338-2". Each card up for auction makes it more of an event as so few are known, let alone up for auction. This rare set is currently represented by just 37 total submissions counting both PSA and SGC census reports.

Mickey Welch of the New York Giants was one of the most prominent of all pitchers of his time and a very early member of the 300-Wins Club. He posted 307 career wins in just 13 seasons. He made his debut in 1880 and owned the entire decade. From 1880-1889, Welch won 285 games with a 2.62 ERA. He had a career year in 1885 when he went 44-11 on an ERA of just 1.66. These are numbers unheard of and most certainly will never be equaled.

Graded SGC 40 VG 3. This is one of less than a handful of known examples we have been made aware of. An obverse surface scratch from the left edge to his neckline and light horizontal wrinkling seen only on the reverse account for the SGC rating for what is an otherwise excellent looking card. If the newly discovered status, extreme rarity and featured HoFer aren't enticement enough we are pleased to report the all-important photo quality is exceptional and is in our opinion the best quality image from this entire collection. We have found this portrait on a Police Gazette cabinet and his 1887 Four Base Hits card. It is interesting that Welch is styling the same "spotted tie" as seen on the N172 Old Judge cards that feature players from the New York Mets. A phenomenal addition for even the most advanced collections.
