1888 N338-1 S. F. Hess California League "McGinty Steals A Base" SGC 30 Good 2 - The Only Confirmed Example! We've heard the term "rare" or "extremely rare" are over used. With that, we'll say this card is nothing less than close to impossible! N338-1 S. F. Hess California League cards are so tough, the lost veteran hobbyists have compared them to "Four Base Hits." We agree and see the SGC census has a whopping 16 Four Base Hits but just nine of these Calif. League gems. Many of the most advanced 19th century collections are lacking a single example. This card was unknown until the 1980's. The most current reference guides mention 19 different subjects.

Unique doesn't just apply to its existence. The card is one of three multi-player "action scenes" in the set, this one is titled "McGinty Steals A Base." The baseball diamond inspired format is also the only known use of this creative approach within this set or any other promotion. The photo is of excellent quality where one can still see fine details in the 2nd baseman's uniform, advertising on the outfield wall and a third lonely outfielder. One finds no stains or soiling, a lone vertical crease accounts for the SGC 30 Good 2 assessment. Adding a card from this west-coast entry is nothing short of an extraordinary opportunity. The combined PSA and SGC census reports reveal only a dozen total entries with this is the one and only example of this card graded by SGC or PSA.
