Description
1888 N28 Allen & Ginter John M. Ward Baseball PSA Mint 9 - Pop Two, None Higher. Offered is the 1888 N28 Allen & Ginter card of John Montgomery "Monte" Ward, graded PSA Mint 9, with a Pop 2, none higher. The valued card of a Hall of Fame player and a baseball pioneer.Monte Ward was a man of action. When he was only thirteen, Monte was sent to Penn State University and an upper classman was hazing him. So, Monte pushed the bully down the stairs. For that offense, and a little chicken poaching, Monte was expelled. Monte loved baseball and worked his way up to pitch for the Providence Grays of the National League. In 1879, he went 47-19. He was 38-24 in 1880 with a 1.75 ERA, and he pitched the second perfect game in history. Jim Bunning would pitch the next one in the NL. Because of arm injuries and other factors, Monte had to limit his pitching, so he became an infielder and outfielder. Ward obtained a law degree and, opposing the reserve clause, he organized the first athlete sport union in America, the Brotherhood of Professional Base Ball Players. He then formed the Players' League. He played 17 seasons, mostly for the New York Gothams/Giants and Providence. Ward was the only man in history to win over a hundred games as a pitcher and get over 2,000 hits. Meanwhile, he was usually managing the team.
This 1887 N28 Allen & Ginter World Champions card was part of a set of 50 cards, only ten baseball players. Beautifully constructed with full color lithographs with a matching splash of color in the background, this set did much to popularize card collecting. Graded PSA Mint 9. Only two have graded Mint, none superior. The card of an icon.
