1888 E223 G&B Chewing Gum John Clarkson SGC VG 3 - Only Two Graded Examples. Opportunity knocked for John Clarkson about 150 years ago. Opportunity knocks for you now. The card is over 130 years old, of one of the supreme pitchers of the 19th Century. John Clarkson had the opportunity of a lifetime. As a boy and young man, he worked in the jewelry manufacturing business of his parents in Cambridge, Massachusetts. And guess who worked there as well? None other than Harry Wright, the Englishman who came to America and later founded, managed, and played for the first professional baseball team ever - the Cincinnati Red Stockings. Clarkson was baseball crazy already, so the availability of Wright must have been a God-send. Maybe his well-to-do parents made the "coincidence" happen. Clarkson learned well. He played amateur ball, turned pro and started winning games. Lots and lots of games. He won 53 of them (losing only 16) in 1885 for the Chicago White Stockings, helped to take three pennants, and then, when pitching for the Boston Beaneaters in 1889, he took what we now call the pitching Triple Crown by going 49-19, with a 2.73 ERA, and 284 strikeouts. He finished his career with a record of 328-178, He was named to the Hall of Fame in 1963.

Graded SGC VG 3. The finer of just two graded by SGC. PSA had reviewed none. This 1888 G & B Chewing Gum is an issue of 87 currently known subjects/poses featuring baseball players from the National League and the American Association. It is believed to mark the first issuance of gum with baseball cards but what we call gum is not the same "gum" of the 1880's. The cards, with sepia photos or drawings, measure approximately 1-1/16" by 2-1/8." And remember, this G & B card of this early pitching immortal is one of only two confirmed examples known and there probably are not more than a handful that exist.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
