1888 E223 G&B Chewing Gum Jim O'Rourke SGC 10 Poor 1. This exceptional rarity derives from the first card promotion done in connection to a candy or gum product, a unique fact for any 19th century baseball issue. The G & B Chewing Gum set remained at an obscene level of obscurity until a sizeable collection was discovered a century after the fact and still, there are just 117 total examples on the SGC census. 19th Century HoFer Jim O'Rourke was asked to wear many hats and excelled at them all. The multi-talented athlete played in over 100 games as a catcher, outfielder or infielder. He also excelled at the plate, posting a .311 lifetime average. The offered card, one of only five graded by SGC, at first appears to be an excellent card with a crisp portrait with a full range of tones and fine details. The card was removed from some type of album or scrapbook resulting tin the surface damage you see on the otherwise blank reverse. In any condition, adding a card with a strong portrait of a HoFer from a set of such extreme difficulty is a noteworthy accomplishment. Graded SGC 10 Poor 1.
