Description

1888-89 Old Judge N173 Ewing & Mascot SGC 80 EX/NM 6. Often argued to be the finest player of the 19th century, William "Buck" Ewing joined Cap Anson as the top vote-getters from that century to gain admittance to the Baseball Hall of Fame for its 1939 grand opening. We find him here at dead center of his illustrious career, and at the height of his considerable ballplaying powers, posing with the mascot of the New York Giants squad he would help lead to the National League Championship each of the potential years of this gorgeous cabinet's issue.

If you've never seen this impressive trading card before, that's hardly a surprise. Just five have ever been slabbed by SGC or PSA, and this representation far outpaces all rivals, with none of the others exceeding a rating of VG 3. Minimal corner wear accounts for the entirety of points lost by this remarkable example, which suffers none of the staining, wrinkling, or chipping so common with these oversized rarities.

Originally available only through the redemption of tobacco coupons through the mail, the N173 Old Judge Cabinet has been a scarce commodity since its years of issue, and represents today one of the most challenging endeavors for the trading card collector. The fine photography and oversized dimensions of the issue serves to expand its appeal beyond the sole purview of the tobacco card enthusiast, however, rightfully drawing attention from hobbyists with a concentration in the early game, and in baseball photography in general.
