Description

1888-89 N173 Old Judge Charles Comiskey (#86-3) SGC VG/EX+ 4.5 -- Only Three SGC-Graded Examples. Charles Comiskey was a speedy first baseman who played a pivotal role for the 1886 World Champion St. Louis Browns but will best be remembered as the founder and longtime owner of the Chicago White Sox. Comiskey was a major influence in the early success of the American League, but was marginalized by a feud with long-time AL president Ban Johnson. Villain to some, hero to others, this founding father of the American League Comiskey is widely faulted for inspiring the betrayal with his issuance of salaries well below the League norm, particularly for a team of Championship caliber. "The Old Roman" is seen here on this N173 Old Judge cabinet card. The pose is #86-3 Catch, Hands Out Stretched Shoulder High, Looking Left. A scarce entry in the widely popular series, this example is just one of three reviewed by SGC. Graded SGC VG-EX+ 4.5. The gold metallic lettering is fully intact with a strong central image. This is the second highest example of just three graded by SGC.
