Description

1888-89 N173 Old Judge Cabinet Jim O'Rourke (Bat in Hand at Side). "Orator Jim" O'Rourke, well known for his speaking ability, was one of the most important of the early professional baseball players. He was a member of the National Association, the professional organization that predated the National League. O'Rourke was present for the very earliest days of Major League Baseball. In fact, he logged the first hit in NL history in 1876, a single off Lon Knight. Jim was a very versatile player, manning the outfield and taking over in the infield, as needed. He was also a great hitter, winning the NL batting title in 1884, and retiring with a .310 career average. Offered is a very attractive example of his N173 Old Judge cabinet, "Bat in Hand at Side". In spite of some very faded pencil writing on the upper left of the image field, this piece is in fine condition for its age, with some surface marring but no loss. Pencil aside, a VG-EX level collectible.
