1888/89 N173 Old Judge Cabinet Cap Anson SGC 10 Poor 1 - Extremely Rare Linear Copy Variation! All of the N173's offered in this auction are from a newly discovered collection and are being made available for the first time! We have been able to confirm the sale of a dozen N173 Cap Anson cabinet cards going back to the year 2000. In the standard version, the copy reads "Capt. Anson. Chicago's " which is draped in a sweeping circular pattern across the chest of the baseball titan. The identifying copy on this example not only reads slightly different - "Capt Anson Chicago." - reading along a flat line. We have found this text layout seen only one other time! It can be found on the only confirmed known N173 of Anson to boast the much more rare "Dog's Head & Old Judge Cigarettes" ad on the card mount! Even without this rare text variation this card is by far one of the most desired and sought after baseball card collectibles of the late-19th Century. Anson was the first great star of our National Pastime who made his debut at age nineteen with the 1871 Rockford Forest City's of the National Association. Not just any member of the 3,000 Hits club, he was the founding member of the selective fraternity that set the standard for future excellence. His 1888 season, from which this card originates, shows National League-leading tallies for batting average (.344), slugging (.899) and runs batted in (84), all are rated among the finest of his lengthy term of service. The viewer is captivated as one gazes upon his handlebar mustache and steely look of determination. Image quality is above average with good detail remaining. The image has overall modest soiling, a pair of spot surface indentions and a pair of brief linear surface indentions. The card mount also has modest soiling front/back, pin holes and some wear to each corner plus a lone "1" pencil notation on the back. Graded SGC 10 Poor 1. This is one of only thirteen total examples in the hands of lucky collectors and is the second confirmed example to have the linear type style.
