1887 N175 Type 2 Gypsy Queen King Kelly (Bat At Ready...) SGC 50 VG/EX 4 - The Finest Example Known! Exceptional in rarity, quality and appeal, this 124-year old artifact presents a rare opportunity for the advanced collector. Those studied in nineteenth century collecting are all too aware of the rarity of the premium-sized N175 "Gypsy Queen" cards. As such, the population of N175s will never satisfy demand. Just a handful of the 2 x 3-7/16" relics depicting National League slugger and a most noteworthy Victorian ballplayer is known to exist. This is the finest example of the stunted population featuring King "$10,000" Kelly. He was more than a ball player, he was a celebrity, an ambassador of the game who inspired the song - "Slide, Kelly, Slide." On the field, his contributions for the Chicago White Stockings resulted in five pennants over a seven year span. When Chicago sold Kelly to Boston in 1887, for the then unheard of sum of $10,000 - referring to him as "$10,000 Kelly" became the norm, so accepted it was etched into the negative used for this striking portrait.

Graded SGC 50 VG/EX 4, this is the best surviving card of a total of five, all graded by SGC. PSA has yet to review a card with this pose. In his Boston Beaneaters uniform, an archaic bat poised at the ready. The front glimmers with gloss still fresh and uninterrupted. The top edge mishap that left a portion of the elegant "Gypsy Queen" logo is quickly forgiven as one realizes the image quality is close to un-improvable, not a single blemish or scuff. The back remains devoid of damage so typically seen on cards of this era. Visually, the relic presents at the EX/MT level, the technical grade from SGC although satisfying, rests on the conservative side in our opinion. A not to be unexpected happenstance with one of the premier 19th Century card collectibles.
