Description

1887 N172 Old Judge John Ward SGC 60 EX 5. John Ward was much more than your typical athlete. During his 17 year career, Ward played shortstop, pitched and managed for Providence, Brooklyn and New York. Graduating from Columbia Law School in 1885, Ward understood the business of baseball and was a champion of the unpopular concept of player's rights. Ward challenged the players clause which eventually led to the formation of the short-lived Players League in 1890. This N172 Old Judge-Throwing, Right Profile, represents a nice solid card for the grade. No creases or wrinkles, surfaces interrupted by a few very slight edge chips. The blank reverse has one spot stain of note. A nice collectible of this important baseball figure.
