    Description
1887 N172 Old Judge John Ward (#478-6) PSA EX-MT 6. Ward excelled at both shortstop and pitcher during his 17-season Major League career. Off the field, his tremendous influence was felt as he organized the Players' Brotherhood, the first baseball players union, and formed the short-lived Players League in 1890. It was Ward who set a precedent that Babe Ruth would later follow by starting out as a Hall of Fame caliber pitcher and later converting to a position allowing for daily play. Ward led the National League circuit with 47 wins with Providence Grays in 1879; in 1887 he led the league in stolen bases as a member of the New York Giants. The second perfect game in the history of professional baseball in 1880 with Ward on the mound. Offered is pose #478-6 - Bat at Ready, Looking left with "Capt. JOHN WARD, S.S., N. Y's" caption.
