Description

1887 N172 Old Judge Harry Wright, Phil'a (N L), Portrait/Looking Right (#510-1b) PSA VG-EX 4 (MK). "Harry" Wright is a baseball pioneer in the truest sense. His contributions include those as a player and manager up to an architect of the game itself. His style of play set the groundwork for modern day baseball, responsible for such innovations as the modern uniform and score sheets. His bonds to the game lasted a lifetime. As a manager, he took his team to six league championships and posted a .581 winning percentage. He was the cornerstone of the first professional baseball team - the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings. He makes very few cards but that in hand makes us appreciate all the more the chance to add one to our collection. Graded PSA VG-EX 4 (MK), only eleven total examples (with qualifiers) have been graded by PSA. The grade is a reflection on corner wear and slight edge roughness. We see no wrinkles or creasing. Erased pencil notation on the reverse explains the (MK) qualifier. The formal portrait of Wright has faded but is free of any surface imperfections. The caption reads: Y. WRIGHT, Mgr., Phil'a (N L). To the best of our research, this is the first auction to feature both Wright caption variations.
