Description

1887 N172 Old Judge Ed Delahanty (#123-3) PSA NM-MT 8 - The Finest Example on Record! "Big Ed" Delahanty was one of the most feared sluggers of the turn-of-the-century game. Three times Delahanty finished the season north of the fabled .400 mark, and his .346 career average places him fifth on the all-time leaderboard. He remains the only man in history to hit four inside-the-park home runs in a single contest. But despite the remarkable talent that earned him a 1945 posthumous induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Ed Delahanty's legacy remains the shocking manner of his sudden passing. Ejected from a railroad train just north of the Canada/US border on July 2, 1903 for drunk and disorderly conduct, Delahanty attempted to cross a railroad bridge over the Niagara River on foot only to fall to his death, swept over the famous Falls.

This remarkable treasure is a gleaming memento from happier times when he was hailed as one of the greatest figures in baseball. Any card that features the mythical athlete is a prized possession. He appears in only seven different promotions dating to his career, his debut as part of the massive N172 Old Judge series, the last being the E107 Breisch Williams promotion which circulated at the dawn of the 20th Century. In the N172 series, Delahanty is presented in one of five different poses. This is his "Catching, Hands at Waist" pose, #'d 123-3 in The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890). This is the highest graded example of any N172 Ed Delahanty card currently submitted to SGC or PSA.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8, this is the single highest graded example of any N172 Delahanty card. Minor wear affects the four corners; one brief edge chipping is seen in the right edge; staining is visible on the reverse. Delahanty is among the most important and coveted Baseball HoFers that appear in the N172 series.
