1887 N172 Old Judge Capt. John Ward, Horizontal. Cooperstown enshrinee John Ward set a precedent that Babe Ruth would later follow, starting out as a Hall of Fame level pitcher and later converting to an everyday player. Ward led the National League circuit with 47 wins with Providence Grays in 1879 and in 1887 led the league in stolen bases as a member of the New York Giants.
