1887-90 N172 Old Judge John Ward (#478-6) SGC 80 EX/NM 6. Ward excelled at both shortstop and pitcher during his 17-season Major League career. Off the field, his tremendous influence was felt as he organized the Players' Brotherhood, the first baseball players union, and formed the short-lived Players League in 1890. Ward led the National League circuit with 47 wins with the Providence Grays in 1879. In 1887, Ward led the league in stolen bases as a member of the New York Giants.
