    1887-90 N172 Old Judge John Ward (#478-2) SGC Good 2. From the John Esch collection. Ward was an excellent shortstop and pitcher during his 17-season Major League career. Off the field, his tremendous influence was felt as he organized the Players' Brotherhood, the first baseball players union, and formed the short-lived Players League in 1890. Ward led the National League circuit with 47 wins with Providence Grays in 1879; in 1887 he led the league in stolen bases as a member of the New York Giants. The second perfect game in the history of professional baseball in 1880 with Ward on the mound. Offered is pose #478-2 - Sliding, Right hand raise, horizontal format. Caption: Capt. JOHN WARD, S.
