Description

1887-90 N172 Old Judge Harry Wright (#510-3, Portrait Left) SGC Fair 1.5. From the John Esch collection. William Henry "Harry" Wright involvement in baseball from the very first era makes him a pioneer in the truest sense. The value of his contributions as player, manager and architect of the game are incalculable. It was his style of play which set the groundwork for the rules of modern day baseball. Along with his brother, Harry played professional ball at the National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP) where his relationship to the national game was forged. Wright was the first to formulate strategies of play which are taken for granted today. He appears on very few cards, his three portraits in the N172 Old Judge are coveted additions. Graded SGC Poor 1. This is pose #510-3 - Portrait, Looking Left. Beard just over right side of collar. Caption reads: HARRY WRIGHT, Man'g. Philas. The portrait quality is good to very-good. Heritage Auctions has sold only ten Wright portraits over the years, the last one in 2018, this is only the second "Facing Left" variety.
