Description

1887-90 N172 Old Judge Harry Wright (#510-1a) SGC 40 VG 3. William Henry "Harry" Wright involvement in baseball from the very first era makes him a pioneer in the truest sense. The value of his contributions as player, manager and architect of the game are incalculable. It was his style of play that set the groundwork for the rules of modern day baseball. Along with his brother, Harry played professional ball at the National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP) where his relationship to the national game was forged. Wright was the cornerstone of the first professional baseball team - the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings. His passion for the game went beyond his own play as Wright was the first to formulate strategies of play which are taken for granted today. Wright's took on the role of player, manger and general manger during his career. As a manager, he took his team to six league championships and posted a .581 winning percentage. He appears on very few cards. Offered is pose #510-1 Portrait, looking/R. Captions reads: ...Y. WRIGHT, Mgr., Phil'a (N L). Graded SGC 40 VG 3. Team: Philadelphia. Copyright 1888.
