Description

1887-90 N172 Old Judge Ed Delahanty (#123-3) PSA EX 5. "Big Ed" Delahanty was one of the most feared sluggers of the turn-of-the-century game. Three times Delahanty finished the season north of the fabled .400 mark, and his .346 career average places him fifth on the all-time leaderboard. He remains the only man in history to hit four inside-the-park home runs in a single contest. But despite the remarkable talent that earned him a 1945 posthumous induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame, his legacy largely remains the shocking manner of his sudden passing on July 2, 1903 when he was ejected from a railroad train just north of the Canada/US border. His attempt to cross a railroad bridge over the Niagara River sadly failed.

Delahanty is among the most important and coveted Baseball HoFers that appear in the N172 series. Any card that features the mythical athlete is a prized possession. He appears in only seven different promotions dating to his career, his debut as part of the massive N172 Old Judge series. In the N172 series, Delahanty is presented in one of five different poses. Offered is pose #123-3 "Catching, Hands at Waist" in The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890). Graded PSA EX 5. Of the dozen cards recorded of this pose and unspecified submissions, this is one just two in EX with one rated higher.
