Description

1870 Peck & Snyder New York Mutuals Trade Card SGC Authentic. Peck & Snyder is well noted for the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings trade card they produced but few are aware that in 1870, using the same format and layout, they sponsored a team trade card showcasing the dominating 1870 New York Mutuals of the National Association. This second year promotional is considerably more difficult to find than the Red Stockings variety. Currently, this rare treasure measures 4-3/16" x 2-9/16" with one edge chip but free of wrinkles or unsightly creasing. The card has been casually trimmed affecting each corner and the bottom advertising panel. The second row of names (which would identify the five seated players) along with all corresponding copy placed below are now lost to the ages. The 9-player team portrait is free of any surface damage with only one dark marking (in the photo) which masks an imperfection in the original negative. The reverse shows a virtually blemish free surface which boasts the well recognized Peck & Snyder player cartoon advertising for "The New York City Base Ball and Sportsman's Emporium" now printed in green. Despite the condition issue, this is a very rare chance to acquire one of baseball's earliest collectibles and an ideal compliment when paired with its Red Stockings counterpart.
