Description

1869 Peck & Snyder Cincinnati Red Stockings Trade Card SGC Authentic. Heritage Sports Auctions is more than pleased to be able to offer as the opening lot for a second consecutive Signature Sports Auction an artifact widely considered by hobbyists to be one of the very first baseball cards ever produced. Although some may dismiss its status as the first true baseball card, this immeasurable rarity rests as one of the finest collectibles of the early game. The card displays a finely detailed image of the young game's first professional team, the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings. The key subjects are George (second from left, top row) and Harry Wright (center, bottom row), the pioneering brothers whose contributions to the development of the sport are far too numerous to introduce here. In its current state, the hand cut (corners and bottom edge) card measures 4-3/16" x 2-1/2." Lost to the ages is the bottom border area where the Hall of Fame pair and eight other members of this historic club are identified by surname and position. There is one short tear into the right edge and a vertical crease. The sepia-tone photographic image does have a quarter-size area of surface loss and surrounding staining while offering strong contrast and detail. The reverse offers a clean surface and a boldly printed advertising for "The New York City Base Ball and Sportsman's Emporium," one of two known variations of this large format Peck & Snyder. The nearly fourteen decades of history relics of this nature hold are without equal. Incredibly, this coveted piece misses by only four years official "Civil War Era" status. Regardless of condition, this is an opportunity not to be overlooked for the advanced collector.
