Description
1869 Peck & Snyder Cincinnati Red Stockings-Small Team Card SGC 20 Fair 1.5. Heritage Sports Auctions is pleased to be able to offer the only known 1869 Peck & Snyder Cincinnati Red Stockings Team Trade card to advertise Harry Chadwick's historical Base Ball Players' Book of Reference for 1869! This first squad of professional (paid to play) baseball players led by brothers George and Harry Wright marked a pivotal event in the evolution of the sport. This squad of ten men would travel thousands of miles between May and November of 1869, leaving devastation in their wake as they ended the season with a perfect 57-0 record. Any carte-de-visite of any subject matter from the late 1860's is rare as the medium of photography was itself within the first decades of its development. The concept of mass producing images for promotion for a growing society was new as well. Considering this first professional team was still a novel concept their monumental impact on the game and eventually society was hardly predictable. The precious few examples known today are treasured additions for even the most advanced hobbyist. This carte-de-visite of the 1869 team is now an icon in the hobby. Issued just four years after General Lee surrendered his Confederate troops at the Appomattox Courthouse to bring a close to the American Civil War, this trade card helped begin a tradition now over 140 years old. The most common (if you can use that word in conjunction with this type of card) verso advertising on the few known examples is Peck & Snyder. Examples with other advertisers are known as is one card with a line-up of the historic team. This is the first copy we are aware of that advertises "Haney's Base Ball Book of Reference" for 1869 by Henry Chadwick. The reverse also identifies by surname and positions the Wright brothers plus the eight other members of the club and lists The American News Co. as agents, we assume for book distribution. The front displays the now timeless image of the team with pleasing detail and contrast. The "C" on each proud chest is visible confirming the nicely developed nature of the print. The 3-15/16 x 2-7/16" CDV mount shows light soiling in each gently rounded corner and one minor edge chip in the left edge. A pair of light and very brief creases barely affects viewing pleasure. The reverse does have pencil notations making reference to a "Hyatt Collection" and thus the seemingly over conservative SGC 20 Fair 1.5 assessment. A truly historical and relevant entry to the hobby and to our National Pastime.Auction Info
