Description

Signed 1970 Topps Thurman Munson Rookie #189 PSA/DNA Authentic. Understandably, one of the most satisfying collecting subgenre for autograph enthusiasts are signed rookie cards of Hall of Fame members. They also pose one of the greatest challenges. For many athletes who passed away prior to the memorabilia boom that began in the early 1980s, finding any autographed trading card is a tall order, and that is definitely the case with the tragic figures like the man who stars in the upper half of card #189 from the 1970 Topps series - Thurman Munson. It was on August 2, 1979 that the Yankees lost their catcher and team Capt. (the first since Lou Gehrig) in a plane crash outside Green, Ohio. He was the 1970 AL Rookie of The Year." Munson was the 1976 MVP who, three times won the Gold Glove ('73-'75), was voted to seven All-Star games and was part of two World Championship teams.

The truth is he was not an easy man to approach for the start-struck autograph seeker. With no lengthy retirement period filled with show circuit appearances, the supply of genuine signatures is very limited. There can not be more than a handful of Munson signed rookie cards and one of those was signed on the back. The card is a solid, mid-grade example with no physical detriments affecting the large, black felt marker signatory. A bit for contrast against the dark background is our lone criticism. The card itself exhibits typical corner wear but no wrinkles, creases or stains. Certified and encapsulated PSA/DNA Authentic.
