Description

1983 O-Pee-Chee Tony Gwynn Rookie #143 PSA Gem Mint 10. The late, great Tony Gwynn was one of the greatest hitters in baseball history. Playing his entire 20-year MLB career for the San Diego Padres, Gwynn was the team's longstanding right fielder who became one of the league's most skilled hitters. With great precision, he collected 3,141 hits including 2,378 singles, and his ability to find openings in the infield at which to slap singles through was simply uncanny. Nicknamed "Mr. Padre," he was the heart and soul of the ball club and led the Friars to a pair of World Series appearances (1984 and 1998). He was inducted into Cooperstown in 2007 and passed away just seven years later at the age of 54.

Offered is Gwynn's scarce 1983 O-Pee-Chee rookie card. Using the same image from his 1983 Topps rookie card (#482), which shows him sprinting out of the batter's box toward first base, card #143 from the smaller '83 OPC set is a collector favorite with far fewer of the cards having been submitted for grading. For example, the Topps Gwynn RC #482 has been submitted to PSA a total of 32,293 times (with 740 Gem Mint 10s being evaluated). The presented example of Gwynn's '83 OPC RC is a much more rare PSA Gem Mint 10 specimen. Of the 1,706 examples of the O-Pee-Chee Gwynn rookie card found in the PSA Pop Report, only 36 cards have been graded GEM MINT.
