A forty-two-year-old time capsule!
1975 Topps Baseball Unopened Cello Case. It's a baseball season best remembered for Carlton Fisk's wildly gesticulating walk-off to keep Red Sox dreams alive just before the Curse of the Bambino flattened them beneath a Big Red Machine. But the trading card hobby has always directed its focus much more intently upon beginnings than endings, and the 1975 season was a particularly noteworthy vintage in that regard.This was the issue that marked the cardboard debuts of future Cooperstown immortals George Brett and Robin Yount, each of which now commands price tags in the neighborhood of $40,000 for Gem Mint examples. Gary Carter and Jim Rice are likewise counted among the rookie contents. The full-bleed design of this issue makes top ratings particularly difficult, as the slightest degree of wear has no white borders in which to hide. Certainly this unhatched cocoon represents the best chance to locate the next pristine butterflies.
The case houses fifteen boxes, each containing twenty-four packs. At eighteen cards per pack, this calculates to a massive haul of 6,480 virgin cards. It doesn't take a math whiz to understand the enormous financial potential. Original factory seals remain intact, and the cardboard exterior exhibits a degree of shelf wear, but nothing that suggests any compromising effects upon the contents.
