Description
1973 Topps Willie Mays #305 PSA Gem Mint 10 - Pop Three! Talk about coming full circle. When Hall of Famer Willie Mays began his prolific career in the Major Leagues, he was playing for the New York Giants. The year was 1951 and his Bowman rookie card was #305 in the historic set. Over the next 22 seasons, Mays would establish himself as perhaps the greatest center fielder who ever played the game. When the team relocated to San Francisco, Mays maintained his consistency at the plate and in the field; 660 home runs and 12 Gold Gloves can attest to that. And being named to 24 National League All-Star teams was another clue that Mays was someone special. In fact, only fellow Hall of Famer Hank Aaron bested that mark by being a 25-time All-Star.So it seems only fitting that the "Say Hey Kid" would wind up back in New York for the end of his illustrious career. In 1972, he was traded to the 10-year-old New York Mets, a franchise that was still finding its own identity after surprising the baseball world by winning the 1969 World Series. It was a nostalgic homecoming for the aging superstar, who was now 41 years of age. Incredibly the following season he helped the Mets reach their second World Series. Playing sparingly in just 66 regular-season games, his leadership on the field and off helped the organization on multiple levels. Offered is a 1973 Topps card that captures the prolific batsman offering an appropriate batting pose for the photographer. What's more, like his rookie card from more than two decades before, this card, his last contemporary issue, is also sporting #305. The presented example is found in immaculate condition with good color, great centering, solid registration, milky white borders, four razor-sharp corners and a clean reverse. Graded PSA Gem Mint 10. Of the more than 5,200 examples found in the PSA Pop Report, this is one of only three cards graded GEM MINT.
