Description

1971 Topps Thurman Munson All-Star Rookie #5 PSA Mint 9. Every Yankees fan remembers the late 1970's brilliance of their fallen captain--the 1976 MVP Award, and Fall Classic glory the following two seasons, but fewer recall his dazzling premiere. He'd drive in two runs and catch Al Downing's complete game shut-out in his August 8, 1969 debut before earning the starting job for 1970, when he'd top .800 in OPS and nail over half of aspiring enemy base thieves. The 1970 American League Rookie of the Year balloting was a landslide in Munson's favor, with only one of the twenty-four electors casting his first-place vote elsewhere.

Here we find the doomed backstop emerging from a cloud of infield dust in an issue that has bedeviled collectors since its inception. The full-bleed black borders looked gorgeous straight out of the pack, but the feature served to amplify the slightest edge or corner wear in a way that white borders generously forgive. The population report tells this tale clearly--just four submissions have earned a Mint 9 designation from PSA, with none above and over 3,000 below.
