Description

1970 Topps Yankees Rookies Thurman Munson #189 PSA Gem Mint 10 - Pop Two. The August 2, 1979 news hit the Yankee faithful like the proverbial ton of bricks. Much like the Kennedy assassination, any Yankee fan who was active in his rooting that year remembers exactly where he or she was when they heard the news that Munson's plane had gone down and that their beloved team captain had not escaped the flames. The beating heart that had delivered his ball club from its longest Championship cold streak since Babe Ruth to its first was suddenly stopped. Despite an absence from Cooperstown, Munson remains one of the most significant Yankees in pinstriped history, and likewise remains the most sought after and valuable figure in the collectibles market of those players active within the past four decades.

Munson entered Major League baseball in 1969. His first full season was 1970 and his talents revealed themselves early. His 137 hits and .302 Batting Average earned him Rookie of The Year Honors and a top 20 ranking in MVP voting. Graded PSA Gem MT 10, this is one of only two cards to earn that revered assessment by PSA. It certainly was not for a lack of trying. Hobbyists and inventors alike have waged a worthy effort as there are currently over 3,000 submissions recorded on the PSA census.
