Description

1970 Topps Yankees Rookies Thurman Munson #189 PSA Gem Mint 10--Dmitri Young Collection. He's the most beloved Yankee lacking a bronze plaque at Cooperstown, and without that tragic afternoon in August of 1979 he probably would have gotten one. But now he belongs to the Bronx alone, shoulder to shoulder with his fellow pinstriped immortals in Monument Park, his number "15" properly removed from distribution within days of his fatal airplane crash.

Here we find the first Yankee captain since Lou Gehrig, bound for the same tragic conclusion but thrilling fans with American League Rookie of the Year stats the year this cardboard commemorative was distributed. Now entering its sixth decade of existence, the specimen survives as one of only four to achieve PSA's highest assessment. That achievement seems all the more remarkable when we report that nearly 5,000 examples of this card have been submitted at the time of this writing.
