1966 Topps Fergie Jenkins - Phillies 1966 Rookie Stars #254 PSA Gem Mint 10. "Mental attitude and concentration are the keys to pitching," said Ferguson Jenkins, and Jenkins followed his own advice on a path that led him to become the first player born in Canada to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Displayed here is Jenkins' rookie card. Sharing the card is Billy Sorrell, a third baseman who played briefly in the majors for three teams. Jenkins started to develop his control as a youth when he threw rocks between freight train cars - yes, between - as his goal was to throw a rock that would not hit the moving train, but pass through the opening between cars. When Jenkins broke in with the Phillies in 1966, he was used sparingly and after only a single appearance in '67, was traded to the Chicago Cubs. Ferguson was 6-8 for the Cubs that season, but in '68 he began an amazing streak of six straight 20-win seasons, the first Cub to do that since Modecai "Three Finger" Brown. Ferguson's best season was 1971, when he went 24-13 with a 2.82 ERA, and he led the NL that season in wins, games started (39), complete games (30), and innings pitched (325.0), and he won the Cy Young Award. He went to the Texas Rangers in 1974 and had a great season, going 25-12. He played another year for Texas, then finished his career playing for Boston, Texas again and then two seasons back with the Cubs. All that rock throwing had helped him into the Hall of Fame, as he struck out 3,192 batters and only allowed 997 walks lifetime. A rare rookie card of the pitcher who ranks fifteenth in wins in MLB history.
