    Description

1966 Topps Don Sutton - 1966 Dodgers Rookie Stars #288 PSA Gem Mint 10 - Pop Four! Advanced is the rookie card of Hall of Fame righthander Don Sutton. After a big league career that spanned 23-years and a second career as an announcer, Sutton passed away in January 2021. Sharing the card is another right-hander, Bill Singer. Singer was an effective starter who twice won over 20-games for the Dodgers, but the card is known almost exclusively as Sutton's rookie card because of Don's Hall of Fame career.

"All I ever really wanted to do was pitch," said Sutton, and he concentrated upon pitching since age eleven. Sutton grew up in Florida and was mentored by his sixth-grade teacher, Henry Roper, who had pitched in the New York Giants organization. After attending Gulf Coast Community College Panama City and Whittier, Sutton signed with the Dodgers and advanced from the minors in 1966, going 12-12 as a starter with a 2.99 ERA. He was known as "The Mechanic" for his workmanlike mound demeanor. For his first five years as a Dodger, Sutton had a record of 66-73. Then, throwing such a tough curveball that some opponents accused him of scuffing the ball (allegations never proven), he had a run of ten seasons that made his career. From 1971 through 1980, Sutton went 166-102. After going 12-15 in '79, Sutton had one more excellent year with the Dodgers when he was 13-5 with an MLB leading 2.20 ERA in 1980. Then he went to Houston and three other teams during the 1980s before finishing up his career in 1988 back with the Dodgers. He finished with a record of 324-256 and a 3.26 ERA. Graded PSA Gem Mint 10. Only three other lucky collectors can claim to have this card in Gem Mint. Is it time you became the fourth?
