1965 Topps Tony Perez - National League 1965 Rookie Stars #581 PSA Gem Mint 10. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," is a saying that - despite its assault on standard English - carries more wisdom than its syntax indicates. The Cincinnati Reds, with Tony "Big Doggie" Perez knocking in the big runs, had claimed four pennants in the 1970s already and by 1976, had just won two World Series in a row. And then Reds' General Manager Bob Howsam fixed things. He traded Tony Perez, the man who was born to drive in runs. Tony had gone from a Cuban factory team, to the minor leagues, then to Cincinnati in 1964. Playing third base, playing first base, Perez just kept knocking in runs. In an eleven-year stretch from 1967 through 1977, Perez drove in 90 or more runs every year. The Big Red Machine's manager, Sparky Anderson, has stated on many occasions that Perez was the leader, the heart and soul of the team.

The irony is that the Reds weren't a machine - they were a team of men who had lost their heart. Since the time Perez was traded, the Reds didn't win another pennant until 1990. Tony Perez played for Montreal, Boston, Philadelphia, and then came back to Cincinnati to finish his career. He played in five World Series, was a 7-time All-Star and wound up with 1,652 RBI, 14th on the all-time MLB list. This card also features Kevin Collins and Dave Ricketts, but the biggest photo and overwhelming interest is that it is the rookie card of Hall of Famer Perez, now with a statue outside of the Reds' Great American Ball Park. Graded PSA Gem Mint 10. One of only four graded GEM MINT! It's a chance to take home a super scarce in condition rookie card of the heart of the legendary Big Red Machine.
