    Description

1965 Topps Steve Carlton #477 PSA Gem Mint 10. Utter the name "Steve Carlton" to any hitter of that era and you can watch as the blood flushes from their face much like it did back when "Lefty" as they called him zipped past another blazing fastball or slider. His talents showed themselves early as Carlton posted winning seasons starting in 1967 and was an integral part of the Cardinals success that led them to the World Series in 1967 and 1968. A menacing 6' 4" vision haunting the dreams of hitters for 16 seasons while pitching mainly for the Philadelphia Phillies, his accomplishments are undeniably impressive. Carlton was the first man to win four Cy Young Awards; His 4,136 strikeouts places him 4th on the all-time list as a left-hander and 11th overall; He is the last man to win 25 games and in 1972 he accounted for almost 50% of his teams' victories by winning 27 of the 59 games the Phillies won that season. Cubs fans take heart in the trade that sent Carlton from the Cardinals to the Phillies for pitcher Rick Wise in 1972 that is considered to be the worst baseball personnel move ever after Babe Ruth and Lou Brock. Carlton won 27 games that year with a 1.97 era and ended his career with 329 wins. Rick Wise went 16-16 and would win only 81 more games over the next 10 seasons.
Carlton was 20 years old when card #477 in the 1965 Topps series pictured him with newcomer Fritz Ackley. This particular example, now graded PSA Gem MT 10 is one of six recorded at this level and is unquestionably deserving of the grade. The corners come to razor sharp tips; the centering is spot on accurate and the surfaces appear as glossy and fresh as they did 45 years ago when this card was first pulled from a freshly opened pack. Although not possible, it does seem time has stopped for this ultimate Steve Carlton card collectible.
